Do you long for deeper intimacy, trust, and connection? Relationships are hard. Even when both partners love each other and have good intentions, navigating relationships can become challenging. Each partner’s individual history, their attachment style, and life stressors play a role in how they communicate and relate. We have years of experience in helping couples navigate challenges and cultivate, fulfilling relationships

Our approach to relationship counselling:

Tailored Approach to Treatment

Whether you seek premarital counselling, couples therapy, or support in navigating a particular challenge, we provide personalized guidance and support. We recognize that every relationship is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to couple counselling. That’s why we tailor our therapeutic interventions to fit each couple’s specific needs and goals.

A Holistic Approach

At Roya Counselling, we understand the importance of addressing the unique dynamics, communication patterns, and attachment styles within the relationship. We use a combination of evidence-based approaches, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Gottman’s approach, to create a safe and supportive environment where couples can explore their concerns, deepen their understanding of each other, and work towards mutually satisfying solutions.

Years of Experience in Relationship Counselling

We have years of experience supporting couples in building strong, resilient relationships. We have successfully helped couples overcome challenges such as communication breakdowns, trust issues, infidelity, and life transitions, guiding them toward harmony and connection.

Developing Healthy Communication:

Effective communication is an important part of a healthy relationship. Couple therapy involves working with you to improve communication skills, active listening, and conflict-resolution techniques.

Promoting Emotional Connection

Relationship counselling is not just about resolving conflicts; it’s also about fostering emotional intimacy and connection. We aim to support you and your partner in exploring your emotional needs, vulnerabilities, and attachment patterns, allowing you to deepen your bond and cultivate a greater sense of closeness.

“The most functional way to regulate difficult emotions in love relationships is to share them.”

Sue Johnson

What is Relationship Counselling:

Relationship counselling, also known as couples therapy or marriage counselling, is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping couples resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationship. It provides a safe and supportive space for couples to explore their concerns, identify underlying issues, and develop strategies for overcoming challenges. Relationship counselling can help couples navigate through various stages of their relationship, from premarital counselling to addressing longstanding conflicts or rebuilding trust after infidelity.

Signs That Your Relationship Could Benefit from Counselling:

Communication Breakdowns:

Communication issues are one of the primary reasons many couples seek therapy. Difficulty communicating effectively, frequent misunderstandings, or avoiding important conversations are signs of communication breakdown.

Conflict and Resentment:

Constant arguments, unresolved conflicts, or feelings of resentment and frustration might be indicators that couples therapy can help your relationship.

Trust Issues:

Trust is at the heart of a healthy relationship. Different events, such as infidelity, breaches of trust, dishonesty, or traumatic experiences, can lead to suspicion and resentment. Repairing the rupture in trust is one of the important tasks in couples therapy.

Emotional Distance:

Feeling disconnected, emotionally distant, or unfulfilled in the relationship can show that your relationship can benefit from couples therapy.

Life Transitions:

Life transitions, such as immigration, parenthood, relocation, or career changes, can create stress and damage relationships.

Intimacy and Sexuality:

Challenges with physical intimacy, differences in sexual desire, or concerns about sexual satisfaction are also signs that seeing a couple therapist or a sex therapist can be helpful.

Parenting Differences:

Disagreements or conflicts related to parenting styles, discipline, or parenting responsibilities can also be discussed in couple therapy.

Unresolved Past Issues:

Lingering unresolved issues from the past that continue to affect the present dynamic in a relationship. These issues could stem from previous arguments, traumatic experiences, or emotional wounds that have not been fully healed. Despite attempts to move forward, the unresolved past issues continue to impact the present dynamic of the relationship.

Dysfunctional relationships can improve:

It is possible to change dysfunctional patterns in a relationship. Relationship counselling offers hope, providing a safe space for couples to navigate their challenges and strengthen their bond. Through professional support and non-judgement, relationship counselling empowers couples to cultivate a healthier, more fulfilling partnership.

“In any interaction, there is a possibility of connecting with your partner or turning away from your partner”

John Gottman

FAQ

What can we expect during our first session of couple therapy?

During the first session, we’ll get to know each other and discuss your relationship history, current challenges, and goals for therapy. The goal of the first session is to establish a safe environment and discuss your challenges and needs.

Do we have to attend all the sessions together?

I typically see you together for the first session, after which I will have one individual session with each partner. We will resume our couples session again after the individual sessions.

What if we can't agree on a therapist?

It’s crucial for both partners to feel comfortable with the therapist they choose to work with. If your partner does not feel comfortable with a therapist, we strongly recommend that you explore other options to find a therapist who suits your needs and preferences.

How often do we need to attend sessions?

The frequency of sessions depends on your specific needs and availability. Initially, weekly or bi-weekly sessions are often recommended to build momentum, but we can adjust based on your progress and preferences.

How long does couple therapy typically last?

The duration of couple therapy varies depending on the complexity of the issues a couple brings to therapy. Typically, couples attend sessions weekly or bi-weekly, with therapy lasting anywhere from a few months to a year or more.
